High season is the wild sunflower blooming period in early November until early December. There is also Maesurin waterfall, about 100 meters high, close to this blooming field and the wild lady slipper orchid center. It is about 90 km from town and the climate during this period is cool around 12-20 degree celcius. This is the peak travel period of Mae Hong Son. Reservation in November and December should be made 2-3 months ahead. If possible, avoid traveling during Saturday, Sunday and the long weekends during this 2 months.
There are 2-3 flights daily; see www.thaiairways.com and Nok Air www.nokair.com, the low cost airline. You can go by bus from Chiangmai at Chiangmai Archade bus station. It takes about 7 hours by bus thru Maesariang Route and quicker for the 10 seats van thru Pai Route about 5 hours (245 km from Chiangmai). You can drive from Chiangmai to Pai, Pangmapha to Maehongson City about 250 km. On the way back, drive to Khunyuam, Maelanoi, Maesariang and Chiangmai about 350 km. Or Maehongson, Khunyuam, Maejam, Chiangmai about 250 km close to Intanon range.
Maehongson is the ideal place for natural and cultural tour
Visit caves, waterfalls, hotsprings, hilltribe villages, temples, Shan architecture, etc.
Cool climate in November to January which makes travel in this season pleasant. Rafting and boat trip along Pai River in the rainy season (June to October) are recommended.
